Welcome to the Stadskoor Tygerberg

 

 

The Stadskoor Tygerberg (City of Tygerberg Choir) was established in 1977. The choir consists of members mainly from Cape Town’s Northern suburbs, but also as far as the Helderberg region and Mitchells Plain.

The repertoire of the choir consists of religious and secular music that varies from the Renaissance to the modern era. This includes (oratoria, masses extracts from operas, operettes, musicals and arrangements of folk- and ethnic music.

The choir performed with various symphony orchestra’s, among which the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (1996), the Hampshire Country Youth Orchestra (1998) under conductorship of John Rutter, as well as the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (2001, 2002 and 2008). They also formed part of the mass choir for the opening ceremony of the Cricket World Cup in 2010 under the guidance of Edward Aitchison.

The choir participated in choir workshops together with Eric Ericsson (1993) and Kåre Hanken (1997 en 1998). As part of the McLachlan choir workshop (2004) they performed The Creation of Haydn with Kåre Hanken as the conductor and the next year Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Wasbe Conference with Jon Robertson as conductor, as well as extracts from the Requiem of Hidas with Laszlo Marosi as conductor.

In 1995 the choir toured Europe with performances in Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Their first cd was recorded in 2000.

Under the baton of Louis van der Watt the Mozart Requiem was performed in 2006 and in 2007, Listz’s Via Crucis as well as a few Bach Chorale with Rudolf de Beer as the conductor. The choir participated in the massed choir performing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana together with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra in Kirstenbosch later the same year, Mendelssohn’s Psalm 95 and the 2nd Symphony under conductorship of Bernard Gueller in the Cape Town City Hall. In 2012 they performed with the composer and conductor Branko Stark at a choir seminar for conductors.

Linda Claassen has been appointed the conductor of the choir since June 2012. In November they performed Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël, as well as other works by Bizet, Duruflé, Fauré and Gounod. During Easter 2013 the choir performed the St Mark Passion by Charles Wood in several churches. In May they participated in the Suider Sanctus CD project of the Oratoria of St Filip Neri under guidance of Acama Fick. In October the choir performed the Brahms Requiem on two occasions in collaboration with the Symphony Choir of Cape Town and the UCT Symphony Orchestra with Alex Fokkens as the conductor.
